Health Minister Demby Highlights Sierra Leone’s Health Service Expansion at U.S. Civic Town Hall
Sahid Bangura Health Minister Dr Austin Demby has highlighted Sierra Leone’s expanded diagnostic and emergency healthcare services, including the use of advanced scanning equipment and mobile ultrasound technology.
Speaking at the Civic Day USA Edition in New York, Demby pointed to the 128-slice CT scanner at Connaught Public Hospital as part of efforts to strengthen access to advanced diagnostic services.
He said the availability of the scanner is reducing the need for patients to travel outside Sierra Leone for advanced scans.
The Minister also explained that the Government’s ambulance programme is being developed as an integrated national ambulance system rather than simply focusing on the procurement of individual ambulances.
Demby further highlighted the deployment of mobile ultrasound devices to improve access to maternal healthcare, particularly for pregnant women living in hard-to-reach communities.
He said the Government’s health interventions are focused on reducing preventable maternal and child deaths and ensuring that children have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
The health update formed part of the wider sector-by-sector presentations delivered by senior government officials during the New York Civic Day engagement. Demby is the current Minister of Health, according to the Office of the President’s Cabinet listing.
