The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs has described Sierra Leone’s hosting of the 69th ECOWAS Summit as a major milestone in strengthening the country’s global image and showcasing its tourism and cultural potential to the world.
According to the Ministry, the summit went beyond regional diplomacy by creating new opportunities to promote Sierra Leone as an emerging tourism destination through increased visibility, infrastructure development, and cultural exchange.
The Ministry noted that the successful hosting of the high-level gathering demonstrated Sierra Leone’s growing capacity to organise international events while highlighting its rich heritage, hospitality, and natural assets, including its 500-kilometre coastline.
It stated that the newly inaugurated Julius Maada Bio International Conference Centre in Lungi provided a suitable platform for the summit and showcased the country’s readiness to become a hub for conference and cultural tourism in West Africa.
The Ministry also highlighted the commissioning of the ECOWAS Logistics Depot alongside the conference centre as an important infrastructure development that would support tourism growth and create opportunities for the hospitality, transport, and cultural sectors.
It further explained that the summit helped promote Sierra Leone’s transformation from a post-conflict nation into a stable democracy, reinforcing the country’s story of resilience, peace, and progress.
According to the Ministry, discussions during the summit placed emphasis on youth empowerment, cultural participation, and regional integration, areas that align with Sierra Leone’s efforts to promote community-based tourism, festivals, and heritage preservation.
The Ministry believes the exposure gained from hosting regional leaders and international delegations will boost confidence in Sierra Leone as a safe and welcoming destination, while encouraging investment in tourism and cultural projects.
It added that the success of the summit strengthens Sierra Leone’s advocacy for tourism and culture to receive greater recognition within ECOWAS development frameworks, ensuring that both sectors remain central to regional growth.
“In essence, the 69th ECOWAS Summit was more than a diplomatic success; it was a cultural and tourism milestone, cementing Sierra Leone’s role as a rising destination in West Africa,” the Ministry stated.
