First Lady Fatima Bio to Address UN Session on Child Digital Safety
Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, is set to participate as a featured speaker at a high-level United Nations session in New York focusing on the protection of children in digital environments.
The session, titled “The Invisible Architecture: Building Safe Digital Systems for Children – Advancing International Standards and Shared Responsibility,” is scheduled for Monday, September 21, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Conference Room CR4 at the United Nations Headquarters.
The meeting is being co-hosted by the Permanent Mission of Türkiye to the United Nations and the Office of the First Lady of Sierra Leone.
The session will bring together global leaders, diplomats and child-safety advocates to discuss risks faced by children online and measures to strengthen their protection in increasingly digital environments.
According to information released ahead of the event, discussions will focus on the development of international regulatory frameworks, addressing online exploitation and predatory digital practices, and strengthening accountability among governments and technology stakeholders.
The meeting will also examine the role of international standards and shared responsibility in creating safer digital systems for children.
The event forms part of wider discussions taking place around the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Türkiye’s First Lady, Emine Erdoğan, is also scheduled to participate in the session and deliver remarks on protecting children in the digital environment. Turkish media reported that the meeting is being held as a side event of the UN General Assembly.
The session comes amid growing international attention to the risks children face online, including exploitation and other forms of harm associated with digital platforms.
