Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Fatima Maada Bio, received a massive welcome from supporters upon her return home following what was described as a landmark achievement at the United Nations General Assembly.
A large crowd gathered to celebrate the successful adoption of a historic international resolution spearheaded by the First Lady, aimed at strengthening global protection and opportunities for girls and women.
Expressing gratitude for the nationwide support, Dr. Bio said the reception demonstrated the strength of a united movement for the advancement of women and girls.
“This reception affirms that I am not in this fight alone. I am standing with my people, and my people are standing with me,” the First Lady declared.
Reaffirming her commitment to gender equality and child protection, Dr. Bio said her vision extends beyond incremental progress to achieving systemic and lasting change for women and girls in Sierra Leone.
“I assure you that, through our collective effort, the future for women and girls in Sierra Leone will move beyond the ‘new normal’ to a future where every girl feels safe to reach her fullest potential,” she stated. “A future where every girl’s dreams are limitless, and where opportunities are distributed equally and equitably.”
She urged citizens across all sectors of society to sustain the momentum, champion women’s rights, and protect girls from exploitation and harm.
“Let us continue to stand together in unity and focus, to ensure that our girls are safe, protected, and empowered,” she stated.
The reception marks a significant moment in Sierra Leone’s ongoing advocacy for girls’ education, child protection, gender equality and equal opportunities on the international stage.
