Former Military Officer in Court Over Alleged Attempt to Overthrow Bio’s Government
Fatmata Grace Bangura A former military officer, Sallieu Jalloh, has appeared in court over accusations of trying to overthrow the government of Sierra Leone.
According to Awoko Newspaper, Jalloh, aged 52, faces two charges: treason under Section 3(1)(a) of the Treason and State Offences Act of 1963, and misprision of treason, which means hiding knowledge of a treasonous act.
Prosecutors say that between January 1, 2024, and March 13, 2025, Jalloh worked with others, some named and some not, in a plan to remove the elected government by force. He is said to have taken part in secret talks, efforts to get weapons, and coordination with both current and former members of the security forces.
Jalloh is accused of helping connect Retired Sergeant Kamara with Captain Aiah Aba Senessie, who was reportedly looking to buy AK-47 rifles and bullets. He also allegedly tried to get support from police and military contacts for the plan.
On March 8, 2024, Jalloh reportedly told a man named Sandy Sesay and others to be ready for what he called a coming “power transition.”
The second charge relates to claims that between November 26, 2023, and November 26, 2024, Jalloh kept quiet about the actions of Captain Senessie and others, even though he knew what they were planning.
When the charges were read in court, Jalloh did not enter a plea. He asked for bail, but the magistrate refused and ordered that he stay in custody until his next court date on Monday, May 19, 2025.
The courtroom was quiet and tense as the details were read out. The case is expected to draw national attention as it moves forward.
