The GEED Foundation has donated school supplies to 300 children from various wharf communities in Freetown, reinforcing its commitment to supporting vulnerable families and complementing the Government’s Free Quality Education programme.
The distribution was held at the Government Municipal Secondary School in Kissy Dockyard and brought together schoolchildren, parents and community leaders from nearly ten coastal communities across the capital.
The initiative is aimed at helping children from disadvantaged households access essential learning materials as they continue their education.
Community leaders attending the distribution praised the foundation for its continued support to vulnerable communities and its focus on education.
Councillor Tutu of Freetown’s Central Ward described GEED Foundation Founder and CEO, Ambassador Dr Walton Ekundayo Gilpin, as an exceptional Sierra Leonean who has consistently supported poor and vulnerable people.
Councillor Zakaria Kanneh of Gloucester Village also commended the foundation’s sustained commitment to education and community development.
The latest intervention builds on GEED Foundation’s previous educational support in communities across Freetown and other parts of Sierra Leone.
In September 2025, the foundation donated 150 sets of school desks and chairs to YMCA Preschool and REC Primary School in Gloucester. The initiative also included a school feeding exercise for pupils.
Community members described the intervention as significant, noting that it represented the first time an organisation had provided such direct support to schools in the area.
GEED Foundation has also undertaken initiatives aimed at addressing the shortage of basic learning materials among schoolchildren.
In November 2025, the foundation partnered with Develop Africa and the Freetown City Council on the “Year of the Pencil” campaign.
The campaign distributed 100,000 pencils, 10,000 pouches and 10,000 sharpeners to 10,000 pupils across 20 primary schools in Freetown.
The initiative sought to address challenges faced by pupils who attend school without essential writing materials, which can affect their participation and learning.
Established in 2007, the GEED Foundation operates across several districts in Sierra Leone, including Port Loko, Bo, Tonkolili and Bonthe Municipality.
Its programmes include nutritional feeding initiatives, microfinance support, youth leadership and service programmes, scholarships and the distribution of educational materials to pupils.
The foundation is led by Ambassador Dr Walton Ekundayo Gilpin, who also serves as Managing Director of Rokel Commercial Bank.
Gilpin has received international recognition for his work, including the “African Banker of the Year” award from a UK-based firm in 2023. His work has also been associated with philanthropic initiatives through the GEED Foundation, particularly programmes aimed at empowering women and girls.
Community leaders said the latest donation demonstrates the foundation’s continued focus on education and its engagement with communities along Freetown’s coastline.
Councillor Zakaria Kanneh highlighted the consistency of GEED Foundation’s interventions, recalling its previous collaboration with Excel Daycare, Nursery, Primary and Secondary School.
Harbour Masters whose children benefited from the latest donation also participated in the initiative, reflecting the foundation’s engagement with coastal communities. Their involvement follows their participation in Sierra Leone’s first Coastal Unity Boat Race, which was sponsored by the GEED Foundation.
Addressing parents, Dr. Gilpin encouraged them to prioritise their children’s education, describing education as an important pathway towards overcoming poverty.
He reaffirmed the foundation’s commitment to supporting education and vulnerable children across Sierra Leone.
