Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh announced on June 2, 2025, that the wholesale price of 50kg parboiled rice has decreased from NLe 700 in May to NLe 665 in June.
This significant reduction is part of a new pricing formula implemented by the government of President Julius Maada Bio, aimed at stabilizing the market and making rice more affordable for consumers.
Dr. Sengeh explained that the pricing formula establishes a unified wholesale price for parboiled rice, with previous reductions occurring over the past months: NLe 780 in January, NLe 735 in February and March, NLe 725 in April, and NLe 700 in May. He emphasized that the government is supporting importers through various policies and incentives to enhance efficiency in the distribution process.
The Chief Minister highlighted that this initiative is designed to address the global economic challenges faced by citizens, assuring that the Ministry of Trade and Industry will work closely with rice retailers to ensure that the adjusted prices are accurately reflected in the market.
Furthermore, Dr. Sengeh announced the government’s commitment to establishing similar pricing formulas for other essential commodities, with the goal of developing macro and microeconomic policies that promote productivity, equity, and growth across all sectors.
Good news for we the sierra leonean
Thank is good congratulations to you sir

But the best solution is that let produce our own rice
Good move Mr.President and our able Chief Minister.

Sengeh wants to be the next president and everything he does is to promote himself.
The new price of bag of rice has been announced which is good but the biggest question is: Is this going to be implemented by business people?
The price decrease on the 50kg bag of parboiled rice is a welcoming news.
While the government is trying to improve the standard of living of the citizens, some retailers can not abide by the government’s policy. The retail price for cement was announced by the government according to distance from the capital city – Freetown but retailers are still selling at the same old price (Nle210) per bag in Kono district. So, my question is, will this price decreased have to be felt by the consumers in the country? Because there is no monitoring effected by the government.
That’s good, but for us in Lokomasama we have been buying 50kg of rice 820 Leones per bag, from the first reduction till now
Some of this things are not completely implemented so the government need more supervision
Indeed you’re perfectly right this comment. This government lack of monitory in all work of field. There are still shop owner who sell Rice at higher cost besides what government announced to sell
That’s good news, but we are still buying at the cost of 720.00 currently as of yesterday 7th June at Bombay. Is this reduction not applicable in some places in Freetown?
Thanks very much, I do appreciate this, but in kono we are still buying parboiled rice 50kg at Nle 840 as of May 2025. This prices should be reflective on the ground.
