Government Defends 2025 Constitutional Amendment Bill as Product of Tripartite Agreement
Sahid Bangura SLPP MP Hon. Hindolo Moiwo Gevao has defended the 2025 Constitutional Amendment Bill, saying its key provisions emerged from agreements reached by the APC, SLPP and other stakeholders during the Tripartite Committee process.
Gevao made the statement during Tuesday’s Government Weekly Press Conference at the Miatta Civic Conference Centre in Freetown.
He said the Tripartite Committee was established following concerns surrounding Sierra Leone’s electoral system after the 2023 elections and the President’s call for a comprehensive review of the country’s electoral laws.
According to Gevao, the committee agreed on several provisions, including the reduction of the presidential-election threshold from 55 percent to 50 percent plus one, Proportional Representation, a 30 percent quota for women and provisions concerning dual citizens.
He said the agreement was reached against the background of earlier constitutional review processes and White Papers under successive governments.
Gevao argued that the 2025 amendment process should therefore be viewed as part of a longer constitutional reform process rather than as an initiative imposed by one political party.
When it suits the SLPP the recognizes the tripartite. But when in the same tripartite the APC calls for the results and the naming of an electorial commissioner, the ruling in the tripartite is not above the constitution. But to change it, the tripartite is supreme. Such nonchalant people in the SLPP party and government.
