Preparations for Sierra Leone’s 2026 Population and Housing Census have entered a critical phase, with international monitors observing a mock census exercise aimed at testing the country’s readiness for the nationwide enumeration.
Representatives from the British High Commission, the Embassy of Iceland, and the World Food Programme (WFP), alongside an independent monitoring team, visited Dodo Chiefdom in Kenema District to assess the implementation of the pilot exercise.
The monitoring team toured several communities to observe the testing of census operational systems, data collection tools, and field procedures designed to improve accuracy, efficiency, and reliability during the national census scheduled for December 2026.
During the visit, the monitors engaged directly with census field workers and community members to evaluate the progress of the mock exercise and gather insights on the effectiveness of the processes being tested.
Initial observations indicated that the exercise was being conducted in line with planned operational arrangements, providing valuable feedback to strengthen preparations ahead of the full-scale census.
The United Kingdom reaffirmed its commitment to supporting a credible, transparent, and inclusive census process in Sierra Leone, noting that accurate population data will be essential for effective national planning, resource allocation, and sustainable development over the next decade.
