Ady Macauley, Lawyer of former presidential candidate of the main opposition All Peoples Congress (APC), Dr Samura Kamara, has confirmed that he has appealed on behalf of his client to the Supreme Court of Sierra Leone over the Commission of Inquiry matter, which automatically void the Appeals Court’s ruling on the said matter.

Macauley was speaking in an interview on VOA with James Butty on December 14th 2023.

This comes after the Court of Appeal in Sierra Leone ordered the immediate arrest of Samura Kamara, for alleged corruption. The court  on Thursday dismissed Kamara’s appeal and ordered his delivery to the Anti-Corruption Commission for an investigation into what it calls his alleged involvement in “shady and secret deals.

Speaking on the said allegations, Kamara’s lawyer Ady Macauley, clarified to James Butty that the said allegations are very uncertain because it was not stated that Kamara embezzle or misappropriated any monies, adding that there are just allegations that he was involved in shady dealings which has never being made clear to public what those shady dealings are.

He added that this is just one of the patterns of the government to go after and silence political opponents.

“What I can tell you is this, the government of Sierra Leone sold shares to Sierra Rutile limited for which monies were paid to the Bank of Sierra leone government account so my client was the Minister of Finance at the time, but there is nothing to suggest that there’s anything wrong with what happened. It was a government decision to liquidate the holding of shares in a particular private company. So for me, this is just a pattern, which my client has complained of that there has been political witch hunt, but yeah, the new government has used state institution to go after political opponents.” He said.

Responding to Butty’s question that the same thing is happening to the party’s former leader and former president, Ernest bai Koroma, being investigated for his alleged involvement in the November armed attack, Macauley said the people can actually read the motivation behind the certain operation and state institution going against the former leader of the APC and the current leader of the APC.

However he said they haven taken a step forward to appeal to the Supreme Court of Sierra Leone and have filed a Seal of execution motion on the Court of Appeal seeking a stay of execution of the threat of arrest and also of the demand that Kamara pay a sum of $723,000 within 14 days from the date of the judgement.
