Former President Ernest Bai Koroma has departed Lungi International Airport for Abuja, Nigeria, following his attendance at the 69th ECOWAS Summit of Heads of State and Government held in Freetown on July 19.

Koroma traveled aboard a Bombardier Challenger 605 (Registration: 5N-FGZ) from the Nigerian Presidential Fleet, marking his first return to Sierra Leone since January 19, 2024.

At Freetown International Airport, he was received by senior government officials, including former ECOWAS Parliament Speaker Sidie Mohamed Tunis, Minister of Information and Civic Education Chernor Bah, and senior leaders of the All People’s Congress (APC), including the party’s National Chairman and Secretary General.

His return follows the discontinuation of the alleged treason case against him, after the Attorney General and Minister of Justice withdrew the charges on constitutional grounds.

According to Principal Assistant Sheriff Mahmud Ismail, the former president was accompanied by Senior Adviser and Senior Advocate of Nigeria Sam Kargbo, Office Administration Officer Ibrahim Baimba Bangura, and Chief Security Officer Moses Tughgba.

The homecoming was marked by an emotional reunion on the tarmac, where Koroma was warmly embraced by his granddaughter, Liz, symbolizing the end of more than two years of separation
