The Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security has suspended all overseas recruitment activities linked to the Guinea route with immediate effect, following allegations that the route is being used to facilitate the travel of Sierra Leoneans for overseas employment.
In a public notice issued from its New England Ville headquarters on Friday, the Ministry said it had received allegations involving some private employment agencies and unidentified individuals allegedly using the Guinea route to facilitate the recruitment and movement of Sierra Leonean workers for jobs abroad.
The Ministry said it is treating the allegations seriously and has commenced investigations to establish the facts and determine whether the reported activities comply with Sierra Leone’s laws, regulations and approved recruitment procedures.
As part of the investigation, all currently licensed Overseas Recruitment Agencies have been directed to report to the Ministry for verification of their overseas recruitment activities. The agencies are required to submit relevant documentation relating to the recruitment, processing and deployment of Sierra Leonean workers and to fully cooperate with the investigation.
The Ministry has also urged members of the public to refrain from engaging with any agency or individual offering overseas employment opportunities through the Guinea route while the suspension remains in force.
To provide further clarification, the Ministry has scheduled a press conference for 1:00 p.m. on Monday, September 14, 2026, at its Conference Room. Officials are expected to provide details on the reported activities in Guinea and outline measures being taken in response.
The Ministry said further updates would be issued as the investigation progresses.
The suspension reflects the government’s efforts to ensure that the recruitment and deployment of Sierra Leonean workers for overseas employment are conducted through authorised channels and in accordance with established procedures.
