The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs (MTCA), in collaboration with the Monuments and Relics Commission (MRC), has held a stakeholders’ engagement at the Pepel Community Centre to discuss the proposed heritage management of Bunce Island.
The engagement brought together community leaders, chiefs, women and youth representatives from Pepel, Rotumba, Tasso, Oku Town, Kissy, Allen Town and surrounding communities.
The meeting highlighted the importance of community participation and ownership in the preservation and development of Bunce Island.
The MRC also recalled President Julius Maada Bio’s historic visit to the island on 11 June 2026, describing it as a reaffirmation of the Government’s commitment to protecting the site and developing it as a destination for tourism, education and research.
The proposed management plan seeks to improve access and interpretation, enhance visitor experiences, promote heritage education and research, and strengthen the protection of the island’s historic relics.
Community representatives welcomed the initiative and pledged their support for the preservation and sustainable development of Bunce Island.
The engagement reaffirmed a shared commitment to community ownership, heritage preservation, site security and sustainable tourism; finally, the tourism sector pledged continued consultation as plans for the island progress.
