An Operational Support Division (OSD) police officer was reportedly killed on Tuesday while providing security at a disputed piece of land under a court injunction in Madonkeh, Waterloo.
According to the OSD Headquarters media team, the officer was attacked by a group of alleged gang members while assigned to protect the property.
Police said the officer was overpowered and disarmed before he was allegedly killed with machetes. The identity of the deceased officer was not immediately disclosed.
Following the incident, an OSD Strike Force team from headquarters, led by Commissioner of Police Alhaji Ibrahim Mohamed Sama, reportedly moved to the area alongside OSD personnel from the Waterloo Division, led by Inspector Idrissa Koroma, the division’s OSD commander.
According to the police, the operation resulted in an exchange of gunfire and the arrest of two serving Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) personnel.
The OSD said one of the two soldiers was found in possession of the deceased officer’s AK-47 rifle, which was reportedly loaded at the time of the arrest.
A team of RSLAF personnel, led by Colonel Robin, later arrived at the scene, according to the police account.
The two military personnel, along with more than 20 other suspects, have been detained as investigations continue.
Police said investigators are also searching for additional suspects believed to be linked to the incident.
The circumstances surrounding the officer’s death and the allegations against those arrested remain subject to investigation. There was no independent confirmation of the police account at the time of reporting.
