Sierra Leone Police Issue Update on Shooting of Gunman ‘Big Fish’ in Freetown
Aaron Parker In a recent joint statement, the Sierra Leone Police and the Office of National Security (ONS) shed light on the dramatic incident that unfolded on the 21st of September 2023 in Freetown, resulting in the shooting death of a notorious artist known as “Big Fish.”
The official press release issued by the security agencies provides a detailed account of the events:
On the afternoon of Thursday, the 21st of September 2023, a security incident unfolded along Lightfoot Boston Street in the Central Business District of Freetown. The incident involved an individual known as Foday Alieu, alias “Big Fish,” who had a notorious reputation as an armed robber and violent thug. Alieu approached a female police officer stationed near the United Bank for Africa (UBA) on Charlotte Street and forcibly seized her rifle, subsequently initiating random gunfire.
Despite repeated attempts by law enforcement officers to persuade Alieu to surrender the weapon and cease his dangerous actions, he continued to fire indiscriminately. The situation escalated when a military officer intervened, urging Alieu to drop the weapon.
Unfortunately, these efforts proved fruitless. Given that Foday Alieu posed a significant threat to public safety, in accordance with Section 16 (2) of the Constitution of Sierra Leone, Act No. 6 of 1991, he was shot and neutralized by the courageous military officer.
During the confrontation, a female passerby sustained a gunshot wound to the head. Fortunately, initial reports suggest that the injury is not life-threatening. Foday Alieu’s body has been transported to the Morgue, while the injured pedestrian has been taken to the hospital for medical attention.
The Security Sector is pleased to report that the Sierra Leone Police swiftly brought the situation under control, restoring normalcy to the area. Further details will be disclosed as the investigation progresses.
