The Sierra Leone Police have ordered members of the Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA) to leave the Bintumani Conference Centre, forcing an abrupt postponement of the Association’s highly anticipated Annual General Meeting (AGM).
The disruption occurred shortly after lawyers and delegates gathered at the venue for the meeting, which was expected to decide key leadership matters within the legal profession.
Addressing lawyers and journalists outside the conference centre, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Sylvester Koroma announced that the AGM could no longer proceed due to security concerns and circumstances beyond their control.
“For some reasons or some circumstances beyond our control, we regret to announce to you that this conference, or AGM, is postponed,” AIG Koroma stated.
He subsequently appealed to all attendees to peacefully leave the premises, saying: “So I’m here to kindly ask all of us to go back home, and we act accordingly.”
When pressed by journalists to explain the specific reasons behind the police action, AIG Koroma maintained that the decision was based on security considerations and that the gathering could not continue as planned.
The sudden postponement has created uncertainty among legal practitioners, with many now awaiting further communication from the SLBA leadership on a new date and arrangements for the continuation of the AGM.
The meeting had attracted significant attention due to the leadership elections expected to take place, including the election of a new President and other executive members of the Bar Association.
