President Bio on his visit to New York signs the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Treaty for climate change.

The signing of this treaty was affirmed by the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Jiwoh Abdulai.

He made the announcement in his statement at the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Action Summit Weekend in New York, United States.

The Minister said this is the highest endorsement of the BBNJ treaty in the Sierra Leonean context.

He furthered that the BBNJ treaty is a step toward a holistic governance approach taken by the international community to advance SDGs in particular goal 14.

In outlining the importance of the treaty the minister affirmed that, “For the BBNJ treaty, to have real impact on the ocean, people and the planet, it’s  implementation must be effective , equitable and fair”

He reiterated that the government has an unwavering and strong commitment to effective ocean governance.
