The Government of Sierra Leone, through the Directorate of Non-Communicable Diseases and Mental Health at the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with its partners, has commemorated World Mental Health Day 2026 under the theme “Lives Experienced Heard: Real Voices, Real Change.”

The commemoration brought together representatives from Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), healthcare institutions, development partners, health professionals and other stakeholders for a mental health awareness walk from the Ministry of Health headquarters at Youyi Building to Family Kingdom, Aberdeen, demonstrating collective commitment to promoting mental well-being across the country.

Speaking at the event, the Director of Non-Communicable Diseases and Mental Health, Abdul Jalloh, expressed gratitude to the Government of Sierra Leone, the leadership of the Ministry of Health, development partners and everyone who participated in making the mental health walk a success. He acknowledged the continued support and collaboration of stakeholders in advancing mental health awareness and strengthening the mental health agenda in Sierra Leone.

The Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Mustapha Kabba, stressed that mental health is an essential component of overall health and well-being and must be treated with the same importance as physical health. He called for stronger collaboration among communities, healthcare institutions, government and development partners to raise awareness, address mental health challenges and ensure that people experiencing mental health conditions receive appropriate care and support. He further stressed that improving mental well-being requires collective action and a shared commitment from all sectors of society.

In his remarks, the World Health Organisation Representative commended the organisers for bringing together government officials, Members of Parliament, development partners and other stakeholders to demonstrate Sierra Leone’s commitment to addressing mental health challenges.

The commemoration served as a reminder that mental health is a shared responsibility and that listening to people’s lived experiences, challenging discrimination and strengthening access to care are essential steps towards building a healthier and more inclusive Sierra Leone.
