The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs (MTCA) has announced that Sierra Leone will celebrate World Tourism Day on 27 September under the international theme, “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism.”

Ahead of the global observance, the ministry is organising a series of national activities, including a high-level panel discussion focused on the role of technology and artificial intelligence in transforming Sierra Leone’s tourism sector.

The symposium is expected to bring together government representatives, tourism industry stakeholders, technology experts, development partners, and young innovators to discuss how digital solutions can improve the country’s tourism and hospitality industry.

Key areas for discussion will include aligning the tourism sector with Sierra Leone’s national Digital Agenda, using artificial intelligence, expanding digital marketing, adopting smart tourism tools, and applying data analytics to support policy and business decisions.

Mohamed Jalloh, Director of Tourism, said the integration of modern technology into the tourism sector is important for expanding economic opportunities, strengthening the sector’s resilience, and increasing Sierra Leone’s visibility as a tourism destination.

Jalloh said digital transformation could improve service delivery and visitor experiences while creating new opportunities for local tourism stakeholders to promote the country’s beaches, historical sites, and cultural heritage to a wider international audience.

Representatives from government institutions, civil society, higher education, and the hospitality industry are expected to participate in the activities.

World Tourism Day is observed annually on 27 September to highlight the contribution of tourism to economic development, cultural exchange, and sustainable growth.

This year’s focus on digital innovation and artificial intelligence is expected to provide an opportunity for Sierra Leone to examine how emerging technologies can support the growth and development of its tourism sector.
