The Parliament of Sierra Leone has postponed the 42nd Plenary Sitting of the 5th Parliament of the 2nd Republic of Sierra Leone.

The parliament will now resume on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 instead of what was earlier slated.

The postponement was contained in a statement by the Clerk of Parliament addressed to the lawmakers.

“The Office of the Clerk of Parliament announces for the information of Hon. Members of Parliament that the last adjourned date for Parliamentary Sittings has been postponed to Tuesday 08/02/2022 at 10:00 AM in the Chamber of Parliament.”, the statement reads.

Meanwhile, Sierraloaded learnt that the postponement is not unconnected to faulty air Conditioners in the parliament house. As a result, the Parliament has undertaken an emergency procurement of air conditioners.

Lawmakers have lampooned the leadership in Parliament for failing to adequately provide sustainable air conditioner in the house.

Many view the situation as negligent and a sabotage of President Bio’s regime. Many have also asked why Parliament is only now deciding to procure air conditions after media bushing.

Others doubt who actually procured the air conditioners and what processes and procedures were followed for the procurement.

Many MPs have frowned at the trademark rehabilitation as well as the slow pace of the rehabilitation of Parliament, adding that about three million Euros was secured for the rehabilitation of Parliament.

MPs stated that the recklessness of UNOPs, the contractor to provide sustainable air conditioner units to the Well of Parliament is unbearable and requires action from the leadership of the House.

Other MPs say they are not happy that after a long adjournment of sittings yet still those responsible failed to put things in place to allow MPs to sit in the Well of Parliament.

According to some MPs, throughout this term Parliament has been undergoing renovation by UNOPS, adding that because of the renovation they have moved sittings to the Bank Complex on many occasions, and also the Bintumani Conference Center, but yet still the renovation remains incomplete.

Many say there is no semblance of progress in the work is moving at a very slow pace that is affecting parliamentarians in the execution of their work.

‘The institution contracted to renovate Parliament is unserious. How can a whole sitting be postponed as a result of the failure to fix the air conditioner in the Well of Parliament? This is embarrassing as Parliament,’ MPs lambasted.

Nightwatch Newspaper reports that, UNOPS provides infrastructure, procurement and project management services for a sustainable world with their mission to help people build better lives and countries to achieve peace and sustainable development.
