Peace Commission, NYU CIC Discuss New Strategies to Prevent Conflict
Sia Lucy Kannah Sierra Leone’s efforts to strengthen conflict prevention and national cohesion have received renewed attention following high-level discussions in New York between the country’s Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion and the New York University Center on International Cooperation (NYU CIC).
Hawa Sally Samai, Executive Secretary of the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion, met with Céline Monnier, Associate Director for Prevention and Peacebuilding at NYU CIC, to discuss ways of strengthening institutional collaboration and advancing Sierra Leone’s conflict prevention framework.
The discussions focused on translating research and international peacebuilding approaches into practical measures that can support early identification and prevention of conflict.
The two officials also reflected on NYU CIC’s engagement with Sierra Leone, including its work related to the development and implementation of National Prevention Strategies.
A key area of discussion was the strengthening of early-warning and risk-identification mechanisms. The engagement examined how lessons from previous prevention initiatives could be applied to identify emerging tensions and support timely interventions before they escalate into violence.
Sierra Leone’s Peace Commission places emphasis on preventive approaches, including dialogue, mediation and community-level reconciliation, as part of efforts to promote national cohesion and peaceful coexistence.
The meeting also explored opportunities to expand collaboration between the Peace Commission and NYU CIC, including potential support through the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund (PBF).
The discussions are expected to contribute to efforts to strengthen Sierra Leone’s national peace architecture and build institutional capacity for sustained conflict prevention and peacebuilding.
