Sierra Leone Becomes 14th Country to Ratify African Road Safety Charter
Sierra Leone has officially become the 14th country to ratify the African Road Safety Charter, marking a significant commitment to improving road safety and reducing traffic fatalities across the continent.
The Legal Counsel of the African Union, Prof. Hajer Gueldich, received a delegation from Sierra Leone to deposit the Instrument of Ratification.
The Charter provides a continental framework for managing road safety, focusing on reducing fatalities and enhancing safety for vulnerable road users. Ratification not only boosts Sierra Leone’s international standing but also aligns its policies with the African Union (AU) and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) frameworks.
Sierra Leone’s action, alongside other member states, supports the continent’s overarching goal of drastically reducing road traffic crashes. It serves as a powerful policy tool for advocacy and the creation of an enabling environment for road safety. Furthermore, this ratification is a pivotal step toward achieving the required 15 ratifications for the Charter to formally enter into force, making it legally binding for all member states.
