The Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) has announced the closure of the Old Railway Line Bridge at Brookfields in Freetown, effective August 1, 2026, following the discovery of serious structural damage.
According to the Authority, the decision was made following a recent expert inspection that revealed significant deterioration in key structural components of the bridge, rendering it unsafe for public use.
SLRA stated that the closure is a precautionary measure safeguarding lives and property, stressing that public safety remains its top priority.
“The bridge will remain closed pending the necessary rehabilitation or reconstruction works required to restore it to a safe, serviceable, and fit-for-purpose condition,” the statement noted.
Motorists and pedestrians have been urged to comply with all traffic control measures and use designated alternative routes during the closure.
The Sierra Leone Police and the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority, along with other relevant agencies, will be deployed to manage traffic flow and enforce the closure.
SLRA expressed regret for the inconvenience the move may cause but appealed for public understanding and cooperation as efforts are made to rehabilitate the critical infrastructure.
