Sierra Leonean social services professional Sahr Aruna has been honoured with the New Jersey Association of Community Providers (NJACP) Heroes Award for his work supporting vulnerable individuals and communities in New Jersey.
Aruna received the recognition on Friday, September 18, 2026, during an award ceremony in New Jersey, USA, attended by community leaders, service providers, colleagues, family members and supporters.
The NJACP Heroes Award recognises professionals in the human services sector for their contributions to supporting vulnerable populations and improving the lives of people receiving services.
Aruna currently works with Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health in New Jersey as a Direct Support Professional (DSP), providing day-to-day support to individuals with special needs.
His responsibilities include assisting individuals with daily activities and services aimed at promoting independence, dignity and quality of life.
Originally from Sierra Leone, Aruna attended Albert Academy School before pursuing higher education at Fourah Bay College (FBC), University of Sierra Leone, where he studied Social Work and earned a degree.
He also worked in different sectors in Sierra Leone before moving to the United States, where he continued his professional career in social services.
His recognition marks another milestone in his professional journey and highlights the contribution of Sierra Leoneans working in human services and community support roles abroad.
The award ceremony brought together members of New Jersey’s human services community to recognise professionals involved in providing direct care and support to individuals requiring specialised services.
For Aruna, the honour recognises his continued work in supporting individuals with care, respect and dignity.
