Sierra Leone Government Approves 1MW Solar Power Project for Njala University with World Bank Support
Fatmata Grace Bangura The Ministry of Energy in Sierra Leone has approved the construction of a 1MW solar power station to supply electricity to Njala University’s Makonde campus.
The 15-acre project site was handed over on May 29, 2025, under the leadership of Energy Minister Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella.
The land has been allocated to Chinese company Transformers and Electricals Baoji Company Limited (TBEA Co., Ltd.), which will lead the project. Backed by The World Bank, the solar power station is expected to be completed by mid-2026.
Njala University has faced electricity problems for over 45 years. The switch to solar is expected to improve conditions for over 7,000 students and staff. The new system will power classrooms, student housing, labs, and offices. It will also reduce the university’s diesel fuel costs, which currently stand at around $40,000 every month.
TBEA, known for its work in renewable energy and power transmission, has carried out similar projects in other countries and will now bring its experience to Njala.
This project was started during President Julius Maada Bio’s administration.
Construction is expected to begin soon, with the university community hopeful for better and more reliable power by the next academic year.
