Political commentator Sylvia Blyden has applauded President Julius Maada Bio for what she described as a strong demonstration of constitutional fidelity following his decision to defer signing the Constitutional Amendment Bill and seek the opinion of the Supreme Court.
Blyden stated that when a leader performs well, regardless of other disagreements one may have with him, it is important to acknowledge and applaud such actions.
She said she joins other patriots in sincerely thanking President Bio for what she described as a “show of constitutional fidelity,” adding that history would judge him well for the decision at what she considers a watershed moment for the country.
Blyden also noted that President Bio credited the Institute for Governance Reform (IGR) for highlighting a constitutional pathway out of the situation surrounding the amendment process.
According to her, she was the first citizen to publicly highlight the proviso in Section 122(1) of the Constitution as a possible pathway out of what she described as the “unfortunate morass” created by the Speaker.
She said President Bio may not want to give her personal credit for raising the issue, but she is willing to accept the recognition “vicariously via IGR,” where she sometimes serves as a consultant.
Her comments come after President Bio deferred signing the Constitutional Amendment Bill and instead sought the Supreme Court’s opinion on the constitutional issues surrounding the legislation
