SLBA Election: With Tuma Missing from Voter List, Martina Set to Claim Presidency
Aaron Parker Lawyers across Sierra Leone are expected to vote this afternoon to elect a new leadership for the Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA), with presidential candidate Martina Baindu Egbenda receiving endorsements from members who believe she is well-positioned to unite the legal profession.
The election comes after the name of outgoing SLBA President Tuma was reportedly missing from the provisional list of eligible voters, raising questions about her eligibility to participate in the election. Martina’s prospects of securing the presidency have drawn attention amid calls for unity, professionalism, and renewed confidence within the Association.
Speaking ahead of the election, a young lawyer expressed confidence in Martina’s leadership, describing her as a unifying figure capable of addressing divisions within the legal fraternity.
“Today presents me with an opportunity to cast my vote for Martina because she represents unity and togetherness,” the young lawyer said.
“She is the kind of leader our Bar needs at this critical moment. I believe she has the capacity to bring members together following the unfortunate incident in Kenema and restore the dignity and cohesion of our Association.”
The endorsement reflects the views of some members of the legal profession who believe the SLBA needs inclusive leadership capable of encouraging dialogue, strengthening professional relationships, and advancing the collective interests of lawyers across the country.
Throughout her campaign, Martina has emphasised reconciliation, institutional reforms, and a commitment to representing the interests of all members of the Association.
As lawyers prepare to cast their votes, the election is expected to determine the Association’s leadership and shape its approach to the challenges facing the legal profession.
However, Martina’s emergence as the likely winner will ultimately depend on the outcome of the ballot.
