U.S. Embassy Confirms K-1 Fiancé Visas Are Not Affected by Visa Restrictions
Fatmata Grace Bangura The U.S. Embassy in Sierra Leone has confirmed that K-1 fiancé visas are not affected by the recent visa restrictions announced by the U.S. government.
This means the embassy will continue to accept and process K-1 visa applications as usual.
K-1 visas, commonly called fiancé visas, allow foreign nationals to travel to the United States to marry their American partner. After arrival, the couple is expected to get married within 90 days. This visa plays an important role for couples preparing to start their lives together in the U.S.
On June 4, 2025, the U.S. government issued a proclamation placing restrictions on certain visa categories for Sierra Leonean nationals, including B-1, B-2, F, M, and J visas. The restrictions took effect on June 9, leading to questions and confusion among applicants.
In response, the U.S. Embassy clarified that fiancé visas are not included in the list of restricted categories. Couples who are applying, or planning to apply, for a K-1 visa can move forward with their applications.
