Ministry of Health, in partnership with the U.S. Government have reached a major milestone in strengthening Sierra Leone’s health security with the launch of the Advanced Level of the Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP). The initiative is designed to equip health professionals with advanced skills to detect, investigate, and control disease outbreaks.
The two-year, in-country program, developed through the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), includes a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Epidemiology and Disease Control. Participants will undergo rigorous academic and practical training, preparing them to serve as frontline “disease detectives” capable of responding swiftly to public health emergencies.
Officials hailed the program as a critical step in building resilience against future epidemics. Sierra Leone, which has faced major health crises such as Ebola and COVID-19, is now investing in specialised human capital to safeguard communities and strengthen national health systems.
The first cohort of advanced trainees marks the beginning of a new era in Sierra Leone’s public health preparedness, positioning the country as a leader in regional outbreak response.
