FCC Visits Shell New Road to Support Fire Victims of United Polio Brothers and Sisters Association
On Saturday, June 7th, 2025, Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr visited Shell New Road with several councillors and members of the Freetown City Council Disaster Management team to support victims of a fire that destroyed the facility of the United Polio Brothers and Sisters Association.
The fire, which reportedly started due to an erratic EDSA power surge, caused severe damage to a building that served as a residence, a welding shop, and a skills training centre. Thirty households were affected, including 26 children. Many of the residents are persons with disabilities who depended on the space for shelter, work, and learning.
To help families who lost everything, the Council donated 30 bags of rice, three bales of used clothes, 30 foam mattresses, 30 school bags, and a carton filled with exercise books, pens, and pencils. A tent had also been set up earlier to provide temporary shelter.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr met with community members during the visit. She said that while nothing could undo the loss, the support was meant to help them get through the difficult days ahead and begin to rebuild.
The fire left behind not just physical damage, but also deep disruption in the lives of people who already face daily challenges. Saturday’s visit brought some immediate relief, and the Council pledged continued support as recovery efforts move forward.
