The Ministry of Water Resources, through its WASH Information Management Unit, has held a strategic engagement with the Directorate of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) to explore sustainable hosting and technical support for the national WASH Information Management System (WIMS).
Developed in 2022 with support from UNICEF, WIMS serves as the Ministry’s central platform for the collection, management, and analysis of water, sanitation, and hygiene data. The system provides critical information for sector planning, monitoring, and policy decision-making.
Assistant Director for WASH Information Management, Patrick Ngaojia, highlighted financial challenges affecting the continued maintenance and upgrading of the system following the conclusion of UNICEF’s project support. He noted that UNICEF had recommended that the Ministry engage DSTI to assess the possibility of hosting the platform within the Government’s digital infrastructure.
Furthermore, DSTI Director Jasper Sembie welcomed the initiative and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to supporting digital transformation across government institutions. He advised the Ministry to submit a comprehensive technical report outlining the system architecture, hosting requirements, and source code ownership to enable DSTI to determine the most appropriate hosting arrangement.
The engagement also explored opportunities to integrate WIMS with the Government’s national spatial data platform to improve interoperability, strengthen data sharing, and enhance long-term sustainability.
Both institutions agreed to continue their collaboration, with the Ministry also engaging UNICEF, the World Bank, and other development partners as it prepares the technical documentation required for DSTI’s review.
