Sierra Leone’s Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie, has become the first woman to deliver a Convocation Lecture at the University of Ilorin in Nigeria, marking a significant milestone at the institution’s 41st Convocation.

Dr. Wurie delivered the lecture on October 23, 2026, under the theme, “From Lecture Hall to Cabinet Room: The Journey from Academia to Public Leadership,” drawing on her professional journey from scientific research and academia to public service.

In a statement on Sunday, November 8, the Minister described the occasion as a memorable milestone, noting that it was her first-ever Convocation Lecture and that she was honoured to be the first woman to deliver the prestigious address at the Nigerian university.

During the lecture, she reflected on how her experiences as a scientist, researcher, academic and government minister had shaped her understanding of leadership, institutional development and national progress.

She emphasised the importance of evidence-based decision-making, critical thinking, active listening and translating academic knowledge into practical solutions. She also highlighted the need for personal reflection, humility and continuous learning as essential elements of effective leadership.

Dr. Wurie further outlined how her participation in international leadership programmes, including the Kofi Annan Global Health Leadership Fellowship, the Amujae Leaders Initiative and the African Women in Political Leadership Fellowship, had broadened her perspectives and strengthened her commitment to public service.

She expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, the university leadership and the wider University of Ilorin community for the invitation and warm reception.

The Minister said the opportunity also allowed her to share Sierra Leone’s experiences and perspectives on an important academic platform, describing the recognition as a memorable chapter in her professional and public leadership journey.
