Dr. Yakama Jones, the Director of Research at the Ministry of Finance who was physically abused at her workplace has disclosed that her attacker has been found guilty and ordered to pay $341 to the state.

She made this disclosure on social media.

According to Jones, the Convict is still harassing her through proxies in and out of Freetown, but noted that she is focusing on her goals and minding her mental health.

It could be recalled that the perpetrator, Mohamed Kelfala, a data Scientist Consultant was charged with two counts of wounding, contrary to section 20 of the offences against the persons act and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, contrary to section 47 of same.

The matter first came up on 15th February 2022 at court no 2 before Magistrate Ngeba, after the perpetrator had spent some times behind bars.

According to Yakama Jones, on Wednesday 9 February 2022 at around 10:00 a.m the former Consultant to the Ministry of Finance, walked into one of the Ministry’s most hallowed building with his mother and beat her simply because she was doing her job as a public servant.

Both Mohamed and his mother were arrested and taken to the Criminal Investigation Department where the former was charged with wounding and causing grievous bodily harm.

Dr. Jones explained after incident that, “Even after the horrific experience, I know that I am lucky. The reality is that violence against women and girls in Sierra Leone – and around the world – takes place every day. There are several examples that reinforce this is every sector.

For women and girls who lack access and resources, many of those attacks go unreported and perpetrators go unpunished.

If there is one good thing that comes out from this terrible event I hope it will serve as a reminder that we must not stay silent in the face of violence. We must speak out and trust our institutions to deliver justice.”
