Sierra Leone Ambassador Yongawo Participates in Russia’s Election Observation Mission
Sierra Leone’s ambassador to Russia joined an international observer mission during Russia’s multi-day electoral process, placing the West African nation among countries participating in the monitoring program, officials said.
Ambassador Mohamed Yongawo, Sierra Leone’s envoy extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Russian Federation, took part in observation activities during the Sept. 18–20 vote, according to organisers of the international monitoring program.
Ella Pamfilova, chair of the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation, said the exercise included more than 1,100 international observers drawn from 133 countries, who were accredited to follow different stages of the electoral process.
Observers were reportedly given access to polling stations, briefing sessions at the Central Election Commission, and operational monitoring centres, as part of a structured program designed to document voting procedures and administrative operations.
Yongawo’s participation also placed him among members of the diplomatic corps engaging with election officials and international counterparts during the observation period.
He additionally serves as deputy dean of the Group of African Heads of Mission in Russia, a role that positions him within a wider diplomatic network of African representatives in Moscow.
The observation program brought together diplomats and officials from multiple regions, including Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East, according to organisers.
African participation also included representation connected to the African Union, with officials from its democracy and elections structures involved in the broader monitoring effort.
The Russian Central Election Commission said the program is intended to provide international observers with access to electoral processes and institutional briefings during the voting period.
Yongawo’s involvement underscores Sierra Leone’s ongoing diplomatic engagement in Russia and its participation in international observation initiatives tied to electoral administration and governance exchanges.
