The Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, has reacted to the display of violence by ordinary freetonians and police officers currently going on in the capital of Sierra Leone.

What was presumed to be a peaceful protest planned by the People’s Power in Politics (PPP) to show their frustrations over the worsening living conditions in the country, has escalated to be bloody and deadly.

Civilians have come out to the streets in large numbers without the approval of the Sierra Leone police to stage a peaceful protest and the police officers are responding with teargas to disperse and arrest them.

The civilians on the other hand are retaliating with a fight and the officers too are using force which is resulting to injuries and deaths of many civilians and officers.

These images have got Mayor Aki-Sawyerr deeply disturbed as she calls on freetonians and the security forces to be peaceful in their interactions.

“I am deeply disturbed by the images of violence going on in Freetown this morning. I am calling on the security forces and all Freetonians to be peaceful in our interactions! We can overcome our challenges with peace!!” She wrote Sierra Leoneans.

Meanwhile, the government of Sierra Leone has announced a nationwide curfew to curb the rising protest in the country.
