Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) flagbearer aspirant Hon. Alhaji Musa Tarawally has rejected the party’s recent directive concerning his membership status and says he will pursue legal and constitutional avenues to challenge the decision.
Tarawally’s response follows an SLPP public notice issued on September 19, 2026, cautioning party executives, members and supporters against conducting official business with him under the SLPP’s name or authority.
The notice followed an earlier directive from National Chairman Jimmy Batilo Songa instructing Tarawally to stop using the party’s logo, presenting himself as an SLPP member or identifying himself as a flagbearer aspirant.
In a statement issued in response, Tarawally described the party’s position as irregular and rejected the claim that he remains a member of the Citizens Democratic Party (CDP).
He maintained that he resigned from the CDP in 2018 before returning to the SLPP, and said he remains a fully paid-up member and national delegate of the party. Tarawally has also cited a copy of a 2018 resignation letter as evidence of his departure from the CDP.
Tarawally further challenged the authority of the SLPP National Chairman to determine his membership status unilaterally, arguing that disciplinary matters should be handled through the party’s established constitutional procedures.
He said his legal team would pursue available remedies, including possible proceedings relating to alleged defamation and cyberbullying, as well as constitutional redress over what he considers a violation of his democratic rights.
The dispute centres on conflicting claims over Tarawally’s membership of the CDP. The SLPP says the CDP National Secretary General confirmed in correspondence dated September 3 that Tarawally remains a member of the party. Tarawally disputes that position and says he formally resigned from the CDP in 2018.
The membership dispute has also generated conflicting statements within the CDP, with reports indicating that four regional chairmen have challenged the Secretary General’s position and said Tarawally resigned from the party in 2018.
Tarawally has maintained that he intends to pursue his bid for the SLPP flagbearership and has called for the matter to be addressed through constitutional and legal processes.
