A member of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) communications team, Abdul Muniru, has questioned economic concerns raised by the World Bank and other international development partners, arguing that such institutions may be influenced by their own interests and policy priorities.
Muniru made the remarks during a televised appearance on Liberty Online TV, according to a segment shared by the station.
He argued that international development partners sometimes present economic conditions in ways that align with their lending programmes and institutional priorities.
“The concerns they raise are not always about us,” Muniru said. “They have their own interests.”
Muniru did not cite specific World Bank reports or data during the discussion. His comments come amid ongoing public debate over Sierra Leone’s fiscal position, inflation and debt sustainability, areas that international financial institutions have highlighted in their assessments of the country’s economy.
The World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) regularly publish economic assessments and outlooks on Sierra Leone, including issues relating to domestic revenue mobilisation, currency pressures and external debt obligations.
There was no immediate response from the World Bank or other development partners referenced in Muniru’s remarks.
The SLPP communications team has not issued a separate statement clarifying whether Muniru’s comments represent the party’s official position or his personal views.
Sierra Leone continues to work with the World Bank on development programmes in areas including energy, agriculture and social protection, while also facing broader economic pressures affecting countries across the West African region.
I always said this sometimes, that Sierra Leone don’t need those thieves institutions. You kept on going to them that is why they will tell the government their guts. Now they will come and steals all the minerals resources from Sierra Leone and still own them. This is unacceptable!!!!. Thank you Mr. Muniru. Those places were setup to exploit africa, especially. Kick them out of Sierra Leone. That is the only way Sierra Leone will not hear nonsense from them. For me, it’s very shameful and sad to see all those minerals resources in Sierra Leone and yet, those thieves institutions will say Sierra Leone is POOR, forgetting they are the ones stealing or putting too much interest on loans they gave to Sierra Leone government. I don’t care who the cap fits. I am commenting for my country, Sierra Leone. Think like Burkina Faso. You don’t have to be a junta to kick out France, America, UK, WORLDBANK IMF, etc, etc, etc, etc. I am really peesoff of wb statements. Peace, respect and love. God bless Sierra Leone.
