Sierra Leonean champions Mogbwemo Queens FC have suffered a difficult start to their WAFU A CAF Women’s Champions League Qualifiers campaign after losing 5–1 to Gambian side Berewuleng FC in their opening fixture in The Gambia.
The defeat came at the OJ Jallow Memorial Mini Stadium, where Gambian forward Sarah Jarju produced a standout performance, scoring four goals to inspire Berewuleng to a convincing victory.
Berewuleng took the lead in the 15th minute when Jarju found the back of the net, putting Mogbwemo Queens on the back foot early in the encounter.
The Sierra Leonean champions’ task became even more challenging in the 37th minute when goalkeeper Godoui Ahouefa Larissa was shown a red card for bringing down Jarju outside the penalty area and denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.
Mogbwemo Queens went into halftime trailing 1–0 and were forced to play the entire second half with ten players.
Berewuleng extended their lead in the 75th minute when Jarju converted a penalty after substitute Marie Pereira was brought down inside the box.
Mogbwemo Queens responded quickly, pulling one goal back in the 79th minute through Marguerite Semedeton Ahouasson to briefly raise hopes of a comeback.
However, the Gambian side regained control as Jarju completed her hat-trick before adding a fourth goal later in the match, securing a 5–1 victory for Berewuleng.
The result leaves Mogbwemo Queens with work to do in their remaining fixtures as they look to recover from the heavy defeat and keep their WAFU A CAF Women’s Champions League qualification hopes alive.
