Former Sierra Leone international midfielder Rodney Strasser has been honoured with the Legendary Sportsman Award at the 10th Annual Achievement Awards Ceremony organised by AWOL America.
The award was presented on September 5, 2026, at the 10th Annual AWOL America Achievement Awards Ceremony held at the Live Casino Ballroom in Hanover, Maryland, in recognition of Strasser’s distinguished football career and his continued contribution to Sierra Leone through philanthropy and youth development.
Strasser’s football journey began in Freetown, where he emerged as a promising schoolboy player. He gained early recognition after scoring the winning goal for St. Edward’s Secondary School against Ahmadiyya Secondary School at the National Stadium.
His performances eventually opened the door to European football, leading him to Italy and a career with AC Milan, where he competed at the highest level and shared the pitch with some of the world’s leading players.
Strasser also represented Sierra Leone internationally, wearing the national colours for the Leone Stars and contributing to the country’s presence on the international football stage.
Beyond his playing career, Strasser has remained involved in supporting young Sierra Leonean athletes through the Rodney Strasser Foundation, which focuses on creating opportunities and nurturing emerging sporting talent.
His philanthropic efforts have also extended beyond football. He supported the hospital where he was born by providing a generator to help address electricity challenges affecting medical and maternity services.
During his time in European football, Strasser also used his platform to speak out against racism and support humanitarian initiatives, including efforts to assist West African countries affected by the Ebola outbreak.
AWOL America’s recognition therefore highlights both his achievements as a footballer and his continued commitment to giving back to the country where his journey began.
From his early days playing football in Freetown to representing Sierra Leone and featuring for AC Milan, Strasser has maintained a connection with his home country while using his experience and platform to support the next generation.
The Legendary Sportsman Award adds another recognition to the former midfielder’s football and philanthropic journey, celebrating his contribution both on and off the field.
