The Sierra Leone women’s national football team, the Sierra Queens, commenced their 2025 WAFU Zone A Women’s Cup campaign with a 3-0 defeat to Gambia in their opening group match.

The loss places immediate pressure on the Sierra Queens as they prepare for their second group fixture against Guinea on Saturday, May 24, 2025. This upcoming match is crucial for Sierra Leone to remain in contention in the tournament.

The Sierra Queens delegation, led by Haja Ramatulai Kamara, Head of Women’s Football and Executive Committee Member of the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), arrived in Mauritania on Wednesday, May 21.

The team comprises 20 players and 8 officials.

Prior to their arrival in Mauritania, the squad underwent an intensive preparatory camp in Guinea. Head Coach Ernest Hallowell had previously expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, discipline, and spirit during the pre-tournament build-up, noting the team’s focus and determination to make a strong impression in the competition.
