Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) President Babadi Kamara has described the Leone Stars as a unifying force for the country, saying the national team represents a shared passion that cuts across Sierra Leonean society.
“Leone Stars is one thing every Sierra Leonean has in common; we all want our boys to win,” Kamara said in remarks shared by AYV Media.
His comments come as the Leone Stars intensify preparations for their TotalEnergies 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, with Sierra Leone set to face Zimbabwe and Equatorial Guinea later this month.
Since becoming SLFA President on August 2, 2025, Kamara has repeatedly spoken about the role of football in promoting national cohesion and inclusion.
At the start of his administration, he pledged to run an inclusive football leadership, saying, “Football has no boundaries, and my executive is the most inclusive in our history, cutting across all regions and tribes.”
Kamara has also identified good governance and football infrastructure as key priorities for his administration.
During a meeting with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, he highlighted the need to improve football infrastructure across Sierra Leone’s 16 political districts, noting that only five districts currently have proper playing venues.
The SLFA President’s latest comments come as the national team prepares for two important Group E fixtures in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
Under head coach Didier Gomes Da Rosa, the Leone Stars have been conducting training camps, initially focusing on home-based players before the arrival of foreign-based professionals.
Kamara has also been involved in the team’s preparations, visiting training camps to encourage the players and monitor the support being provided by the football association.
His engagement has extended to the national youth teams, including a visit to the U-17 squad ahead of its WAFU-A qualifying campaign in Senegal.
Sierra Leone is in Group E of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers alongside the Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Zimbabwe.
The Leone Stars are scheduled to host Zimbabwe on September 24 before travelling to face Equatorial Guinea on September 28.
With the qualifiers approaching, Kamara’s message places national unity and support for the Leone Stars at the centre of the team’s campaign.
Sierra Leone missed the 2023 and 2025 Africa Cup of Nations editions, making the upcoming qualifying campaign another opportunity for the national team to pursue a return to the continental tournament.
