The Intervarsity Sports, which has not been in existence for over 14 years, has once again been resuscitated through the leadership of Prof. Alpha Tejan Wurie, Minister of Technical and Higher Education. The essence of the whole exercise is to bolster friendliness among students of tertiary institutions.

The athletics competition, which occurred on 28th and 29th April 2022 at Bo Mini Stadium, came after a football and volleyball tournament had been organized in March 2022 at SLFA Academy and SS Camp in Freetown.

In his speaking note to students during the competition in Bo, the Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Prof. Alpha Tejan Wurie noted that if we are to partake in intervarsity sports competitions internationally, we have to start somewhere as a country. “Competing is part of academia. You should do it with all seriousness.

However, if you do not win, do not show any form of rancor,” he urged the participating teams. He admonished them to avoid all forms of cheating during the competition. “The moment you cheat in this, you will cheat in your exams and even cheat in your workplace, which will have an overall negative impact on the country’s growth,” he further said.

Prof. Wurie expressed delight in seeing the public as well as private tertiary institutions together in their quest to uphold national unity, adding that unifying ourselves as a nation is highly dependent on the young.

The competition was witnessed by a host of dignitaries, including the Deputy Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Mr. Sarjoh Aziz-Kamara; the Chief Technical and Higher Education Officer, Dr. Josephus Brimah; and the Minister of Sports, Mr. Ibrahim Nyenlenkeh.
