Sierra Leone Chairs UN Security Council Committee on Dr Congo And South Sudan
Sierra Leone has been appointed the chairmanship of two crucial committees in the United Nations Security Council. One focused on the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the other on South Sudan.
In the note presented by the Security Council President on the 2nd January 2024, Sierra Leone will take the helm of the Security Council Committee established under resolution 1533 (2004), mandated to monitor the implementation of a peace agreement in the DRC and address ongoing insecurity in the region.
This conflict has plagued the country for decades, with millions displaced and facing humanitarian crises. Sierra Leone’s leadership brings a unique perspective, having navigated a civil war of its own and emerged as a champion of peacebuilding efforts.
The second committee to be chaired by Sierra Leone is established under resolution 2206 (2015) and tackles the complex conflict in South Sudan. The world’s youngest nation has been embroiled in civil war since 2013, with devastating consequences for its people.
Sierra Leone’s chairmanship offers an opportunity to inject fresh ideas and potentially guide the country towards a lasting peace.
