Guinea-Bissau and Sierra Leone Settle for a 1-1 Draw in World Cup Qualifier
Bernice Bangura A late equalizer from Mama Baldé secured a 1-1 draw for Guinea-Bissau against Sierra Leone in a fiercely contested FIFA World Cup qualifying match at the Estadio 24 de Setembro.
The result leaves both teams in the middle of the Group A standings.
The visitors, Sierra Leone, started the match with intent, and their pressure paid off just before halftime. Veteran striker Kei Kamara broke the deadlock in the 47th minute, heading home an assist from Sallieu Tarawallie to give his side a crucial lead.
Guinea-Bissau, however, refused to be defeated on home soil. As the second half wore on, they pushed for an equalizer, and their efforts were rewarded in the 75th minute.
Following a well-worked move, Mama Baldé found the back of the net with a right-footed shot, leveling the score and bringing the home crowd to its feet.
The match was a physical affair, with the referee issuing several yellow cards throughout the contest. Both teams made multiple substitutions in the second half in an attempt to find a winning goal, but neither side could break the deadlock.
The draw means Sierra Leone retains its third-place position in Group A with 9 points, while Guinea-Bissau remains in fourth. With only two matches played between the two teams this season, the rivalry continues to be evenly matched.
