The Executive Director and Senior Programmes Manager of the Campaign for Good Governance (CGG) recently attended the ECOWAS Regional Consultation on the “Future of Democracy, Constitutional Order, and Good Governance in West Africa” held in Ghana.
The three-day event offered a platform for frank discussions on the current state of ECOWAS and the vision for its future.
Participants examined key issues including democratic backsliding, presidential term limits, rule of law, electoral systems, civic education, and the role of civil society, youth, and women in promoting democracy.
The consultation also focused on addressing governance failures, military coups, political disenchantment, and enhancing institutional accountability.
Recommendations from the consultation aim to strengthen ECOWAS institutions, improve enforcement mechanisms, and rebuild the social contract between states and citizens. Effective implementation is expected to foster a more inclusive, accountable, and people-centred ECOWAS.
