A 58-year-old man, Didi Maxwell, has been remanded in custody after appearing before Magistrate Mustapha Braima Jah of the Pademba Road Magistrate Court No. 1 in Freetown on allegations of unlawful possession and dealing in prohibited drugs, contrary to the National Drug Control Act of 2008.
According to the charge sheet, Maxwell was arrested on Thursday, 25th September 2025, at No. 58 Robert Street in Bo, after he was allegedly found with 148 wraps and one sachet of kush, as well as half a compressed parcel of cannabis sativa.
Police sources say the suspect was also engaged in dealing the substances without lawful authority.
During the brief court session, State Prosecutor A.B.N. Taylor Kamara informed the court that the prosecution had fully complied with Section 112(2) of the Criminal Procedure Act No. 32 of 1965, noting that all relevant documents, including the charge sheet and witness statements, had been served on the defence.
The accused, who appeared calm in the dock, did not take a plea as the charges were read out. Defence counsel requested a short adjournment to enable him to formally apply for bail on behalf of his client.
In response, Magistrate Jah ordered that Maxwell be remanded at the Male Correctional Centre pending further hearing. The matter was adjourned to Monday, 27th October 2025.
Police have intensified their crackdown on the illegal trade of kush and cannabis across the country, describing it as a major contributor to rising youth addiction and violent crime.
