The Ministry of Social Welfare has received a food donation from the People’s Republic of China through the Chinese Embassy as a Christmas gift for some vulnerable members of the Christian community in Sierra Leone.
The donation comprised 200 bags of 25kg rice and assorted food items. During the handing over ceremony, a Chinese diplomat described it as a gesture of goodwill and friendship, reaffirming China’s longstanding partnership with Sierra Leone and underscoring its commitment to humanitarian support.
The Minister of Social Welfare, Melrose Karminty, expressed profound gratitude to the Chinese Government and the Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone.

She stressed on the significance of the balanced support, noting that she had previously engaged with the former Chinese Ambassador to advocate for equal assistance for the Christian community during Christmas, similar to the long-standing support provided to the Muslim community during Ramadan.
Minister Karminty noted with appreciation that this request was accepted and that for the past two years, the Chinese Embassy has extended support during Christmas in the same spirit. She praised China’s two decades of consistent support as a true reflection of Sierra Leone’s cherished principle of religious tolerance, affirming that such balanced assistance strengthens national unity and interfaith harmony.
The Minister concluded by wishing the people of China a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year and looked forward to deeper bilateral cooperation in the future.
