The Office of National Security has announced that it is investigating recent media reports concerning a cocaine seizure by Spanish Police involving a vessel registered in the Comoros Islands, which reportedly departed Freetown on 22 April 2026 before being intercepted en route to the Mediterranean.

In a press release issued on 7th May 2026, the Security Sector stated that both the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority and the Sierra Leone Police have not received any official communication from Spanish authorities regarding the reported incident.

Despite the absence of formal notification, authorities disclosed that preliminary inquiries and inter-agency assessments have already commenced to determine the facts surrounding the vessel, its voyage history, and movements through the port.

According to the release, investigations remain ongoing, with relevant institutions expected to carry out all necessary verification procedures to establish the full circumstances of the matter.

The Security Sector further assured the public and international partners that the issue is being handled with seriousness and professionalism, reaffirming Sierra Leone’s commitment to combating transnational organised crime and maintaining international security standards.
