Chief Justice of Sierra Leone, His Lordship Honourable Justice Komba Kamanda, has undertaken an inspection visit to Kenema City to assess the progress of ongoing construction work on the District’s first-ever Sexual Offences Model Court.

The unannounced visit forms part of the Chief Justice’s continued drive to expand access to justice and strengthen the adjudication of sexual offences cases across the country. Once completed in the coming weeks, the Kenema Sexual Offences Model Court will become the third of its kind to be established under the leadership of Chief Justice Komba Kamanda, following similar courts in Makeni and Bo.

This milestone is expected to place Honourable Chief Justice Komba Kamanda in history as the first Chief Justice in Sierra Leone to establish Sexual Offences Model Courts in Makeni, Bo and Kenema within a relatively short period in office, underscoring his unwavering commitment to judicial reform and the protection of vulnerable persons, especially women and children.

During the visit, the Honourable Chief Justice personally inspected the level of work completed on the Kenema court project and expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far. The establishment of the Sexual Offences Model Court in Kenema is expected to significantly enhance the speedy and specialised handling of sexual offences matters in the district and surrounding communities.

In addition to inspecting the construction site, the Honourable Chief Justice also observed live court proceedings at both the Magistrates’ Court and the High Court in Kenema. The monitoring visit was aimed at assessing court operations, observing the conduct of proceedings, and gaining first-hand insight into the administration of justice in the District.

Upon his arrival in Kenema, the Chief Justice was received by the Resident High Court Judge, Honourable Justice Abdul Sheriff, accompanied by the two resident Magistrates serving in Kenema District.

The visit drew commendation from litigants and members of the public who were present in court. Many expressed admiration for the Chief Justice’s hands-on leadership style and praised what they described as unprecedented reforms within the Judiciary.

Residents of Kenema also welcomed the visit with enthusiasm, describing it as a strong demonstration of the Judiciary’s commitment to the people.

Residence in Kenema hailed Honourable Justice Komba Kamanda as “a great reformer,” noting that his legacy in advancing access to justice across Sierra Leone is already remarkable.
