The Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA) has denied reports circulating on social media that authorities intercepted a large shipment of illicit drugs aboard a Brussels Airlines aircraft at Freetown International Airport.
In a press statement, the Authority described the claims as “false, misleading and baseless,” stressing that no drugs were seized from any Brussels Airlines flight or from any other aircraft operating through Freetown International Airport in Lungi.
According to the SLCAA, the reports alleged that a substantial quantity of illicit drugs was discovered on a Brussels Airlines aircraft on Thursday, July 30, 2026. The Authority said the information is entirely inaccurate and does not reflect what occurred at the airport.
The SLCAA said aviation safety and security remain its top priorities and emphasized that all operations at Freetown International Airport continue to comply with national laws and international civil aviation standards.
The Authority also called on the public, media organizations, and social media users to avoid sharing unverified information that could mislead the public. It urged citizens to rely on official statements issued by the SLCAA and other competent state institutions for accurate information.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting the credibility of Sierra Leone’s aviation sector, the Authority thanked the public for its continued cooperation and support in promoting factual and reliable information.
